Effective January 1, 2021:
Automatic Renewal of Library Items
Borrowed items on a patron’s account will be automatically renewed (3) three days before the due date, with certain exceptions.
- Most physical items (books, audiobooks, DVDs, magazines) that are checked out on your account will automatically renew.
- You can also renew items yourself by logging into your account.
- An item cannot be renewed if it has an outstanding hold request.
When will my items automatically renew?
The system will attempt to renew your checked-out items (3) three days before the due date. If an item cannot be renewed, you will continue to receive email notices about due dates or overdue items and you may try to renew again at any time before you return the item.
How will I know if my item was successfully auto-renewed?
If your item is eligible for renewal, your new due date will be calculated based on the original due date. Books and audiobooks each have a checkout period for 21 days; DVDs and Magazines for 7 days. So, for example, if you check out a book with an original due date of March 1, the new due date after it renews will be March 22.
A reminder message, sent (3) three days prior to the original due date, will display the new due date for automatically renewed items and the original due date for ineligible items. Log into your account to opt into email notifications, or ask a staff member for assistance.
You can check your due dates at any time by logging into your online account or speaking with a staff member during library hours.
Why didn’t my items auto-renew?
Items cannot be renewed if:
- The item has an outstanding hold request
- The item reached its maximum number of renewals
- Your account is blocked due to excessive fines or fees
- The item is a digital item, such as an eBook or eAudiobook
- The item is an ILL (Interlibrary Loan)
What happens if my items aren’t automatically renewed?
If the system was unable to renew your items (3) three days before the due date, they will retain their original due date. You may try manually renewing materials at any time.
How am I notified when an item auto-renews?
Customers who have an email address on their account, and have selected email as their notification preference, will receive a (3) three day notice prior to the due date of their item. This notice will indicate which items were renewed and which items could not be renewed. These notices are only sent out via email and will be titled “A reminder from your library.”
If you do NOT have an email listed on your account your items will still be automatically renewed. You can check the status and due dates of your items by logging into your account via our website, or contacting us at 972-247-2511. Please ask a staff member about adding or editing the email address on your account.
Can I opt out of the auto-renewal feature?
Unfortunately, no. Automatic renewal is universally available to all our patrons. You are welcome to return any checked-out item, at any time.
Manually Renewing Materials
All items may be renewed up to (3) three times unless the item has an outstanding hold request. Patrons may call 972-247-2511 to request staff assistance in renewing items, or renew items through the Library's online catalog using your library card number and PIN.
