UPDATE: February 17, 2016

Recycling program kickoff coming

With trash collection remaining twice a week on designated days, residents can look forward to the return of residential recycling the week of April 4.
Anyone not ready to participate in curbside recycling has until February 26 to opt-out of the program.
New 95-gallon carts will be delivered to Farmers Branch residents beginning the week of March 21 that will be an important part of the new residential recycling program.
Lightweight and easy to maneuver, the new carts will be designed specifically for depositing recyclable materials. Officials said there is no need to sort those materials as that takes place at the recyclable material recovery facility.
Carts as well as the recycling service are free to Farmers Branch residents.
Under the City's new solid waste contract with Community Waste Disposal, current trash service days and location of pickup will not change. Also, Green Grabber bulk pickup service will not change. However, the City will no longer provide paper bags to residents. Paper or plastic sacks will be acceptable for trash collection and can be purchased at most grocery or hardware stores.
Recycling carts must be stored in a location or manner so that they are hidden or screened from street view. They will be placed in the same vicinity as your trash for regular pickup.
Carts can be placed out for collection no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before pickup and must be returned to their storage location no later than 8 a.m. the day after pickup.
When trash is collected at the curb, recycling carts must be placed behind the curb, not in the street. For streets with no curb, the cart must be placed behind the pavement. It is permissible to place the container in or at the edge of the driveway behind the curb-line or edge of the pavement.
For residents whose trash is collected in an alley, carts must be placed adjacent to the alleyway, away from fences and hedges.

UPDATE: February 5, 2016

What can be recycled?
Responding to a recommendation from a citizen committee as well as repeated requests through the years, a new residential recycling program will begin in Farmers Branch this spring at no additional cost to residents.
A calendar for rollout of the new recycling service has been announced, along with a new web page to provide detailed information to residents.
New, 95-gallon rolling containers for recyclable materials will be delivered to residents, starting the week of March 21. Anyone wishing to decline participation in the program has until February 26 to opt out of receiving a recycling cart.
Curbside recycling service will begin the week of April 4.
"Wherever residents currently place trash out for collection will be where the recycling cart will also be placed," said Farmers Branch Environmental Health Manager Shane Davis. "If their trash is collected in the alley, that's where recycling will also be picked up. If collected on the street, recycling will be picked up on the street."

UPDATE: December 7, 2015

  • At the December 7, 2015 special Council meeting, the City Council voted 4 to 1 to revise their direction to the City Manager to negotiate a contract with Community Waste Disposal (CWD) for trash and curbside recycling services using:
    • Twice a week pickup for trash in bags, paper or plastic, as provided by residents. The City will no longer provide bags.
    • Optional curbside recycling services using a single 95-gallon rolling container.
    • More information will be forthcoming in January about curbside recycling services.
    • Other than the cost of bags, there will be no other fees to citizens associated with this service.
    • As before, with the advent of curbside recycling services, the stationary drop off recycling locations at Oran Good Park and the Barney Wood Athletic Complex, near the Rec Center, will be discontinued. The drop-off location at the Citizen Collection Center, 1399 Valley View Lane, will continue during regular operating hours of 9 am to 6 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

BACKGROUND:

  • This has been superseded by direction at the December 7 meeting.
